We’re not going to tell you every pool needs a professional. Plenty of homeowners do a great job with their own pool for years. But there’s a line — a set of specific signals — where the cost of DIY (in time, chemicals, and mistakes) starts to outweigh the cost of hiring someone.
Here are the six signs we look for.
1. You’ve Balanced the Chemistry Correctly and It Won’t Hold
You test, you adjust, and 48 hours later everything is back off. That’s not a chemistry problem — that’s a symptom of something else: high phosphates, high combined chlorine, a broken salt cell, or a filter issue. If you can’t get chemistry to stay stable for a week, something upstream needs diagnosis.
2. Your Filter Pressure Won’t Come Down After Backwashing
Backwash a sand filter and the pressure should drop back to baseline. If it doesn’t, your media is spent (sand should be replaced every 5–7 years), your laterals are cracked, or you have a valve problem. DE and cartridge filters have their own version of this. Don’t ignore it — a filter running at high pressure will eventually fail catastrophically.
3. You Hear Weird Noises from the Pump
Pumps should hum. Not screech, grind, whine, or thump. Weird noises usually mean bearings on their way out, an impeller with debris, or air in the system. Left alone, a failing pump seizes — and replacement pumps in Orange County run $600–1,500+ installed.
4. You’ve Recovered a Green Pool Twice This Year
Once is bad luck. Twice is a pattern. Either your routine has a gap or your equipment isn’t keeping up with the pool’s conditions (heat, tree cover, bather load). A pro can spot the root cause instead of fighting the symptom every three months.
5. The Waterline Tile Has Calcium Scale You Can’t Remove
Light calcium buildup at the waterline scrubs off with a pumice stone. Heavy calcium — the crusty white line that laughs at pumice — needs professional acid or bead-blasting. Ignoring it means it spreads and eventually etches the tile permanently.
6. You Want Your Weekends Back
Honestly — this is the most common reason people hire us. They know how to maintain the pool. They just don’t want to spend two hours every Saturday morning doing it. If that’s you, no shame. That’s what we’re here for.
